Given the clandestine tone of this gig, I did feel like I was participating in a spoiling night of surreptitious gluttony, lapping up Britain’s hottest dance and D n B acts of which I, and the 100-strong crowd, left Cargo coyly licking our bass-smattered chops.

What’s more, given the sparse number of spectators and the whole of Cargo to romp around in, the acts also felt free to chill and mix with us particularly fortunate punters, of which I have to admit that the MC from Chase + Status is exceptionally charming.

A collaboration between The Bays & Beardyman kicked off the evening in aid of the homeless charity Crisis. As a staunch follower of The Bays, I was not so disappointed by Beardyman’s rather latent performance that was somewhat drowned out by the 4-strong electro bands’ talents. Nevertheless, we all know this MC has the potential to blow our minds usually, and by the whoops from the crowd, defined this set as the highlight of the evening.

Chase + Status followed with a delectable D n B set, finishing with their latest track which is interlaced with some intense lyrics of, ‘I remember when I used to feel somethin’….I remember when I used to feel somethin’ – a suitably incensed sound bite from which to construct and launch a very heavy drop, that will get any D n B fan all nicely riled up.

Zane Lowe was the third act of the evening; showing off his dizzying mixing which no doubt demonstrates his abilities but sounded like I was listening to the top 40 at quantum speed. Impressive nonetheless.

Pendulum brought the night to its zenith with a familiarly professional set, but was by no means the best act of the gig and proved that Chase + Status are hot on their well worn heels. On that high we all covertly left the arches, after an uncharacteristic feast of a Wednesday night.

Evening chaps. I decided to take a brief break from rocking back and forth in the dark, crying, to point you towards this little stab of magnificence provided by Simian Mobile Disco. By now we’ve all heard a fair portion of their new LP, but a new development has arisen in the form of a lovely new HD video for new single ‘Audacity of Huge’ featuring Chris Keating. I won’t bore you with the grisly details of either the track, nor the odd rash that has appeared near my left nipple (It’s shaped like Lithuania!). Instead, I will simply post the video, which has it’s definition level set to high. Especially good news if your “bands” happen to be “broad”.

If you have seen me DJ recently or even if you have been within a half-mile radius of me, you will have heard me playing and shouting about Buraka Som Sistema. They are an electro outfit hailing from Portugal and they have been celebrated for their innovations in the “progressive kuduro” movement.

Kuduro is a form of music that originated in Angola but has since taken a foothold in Lisbon. It is an energetic, upbeat and danceable music that was hybridised out of African percussion, Calypso and Soca rhythms, and European electronica. Even its name is a composite, referencing both an Angolan dialect, but also meaning “stiff bottom” in Portuguese. This definition draws more parallels with the world dance cultures of Hip-hop and Dancehall. This genre is transcendent, sprawling and culturally diverse. Vivian Host, in her essay ‘The New World Music,’ even cites Daft Punk as an inspirational force.

Buraka Som Sistema have now become the poster band for world Kuduro music - they have even won an MTV European Music Award. They launched themselves into the wider consciousness when they released “Sound of Kuduro” which featured the highly distinctive vocals of M.I.A. The video was in fact shot guerrilla-style in Angola, hence declaring their musical provenance and tipping their hats to their African roots.

This track became the first single from their studio album “Black Diamond.” It is however their second release “IC19” that inspired me to write this blog entry. I reckon it is the stand out track on their album, and that alone with the juicy A1 Bassline remix would have been enough to get me salivating. However, we have now been spoilt by the release of a remix EP, produced by the mighty mighty record label Mad Decent. A record label that is owned by that little known artist Diplo(!)…if this is any indication of where BSS are headed, I think we can expect their music to transcend dancefloors and scenes in much the same and infectious way it was conceived.

A bevy of Sun Page 3 girls are set to launch their DJ outfit ‘Headphones & Heels’ at a new Ministry of Sound night, Glam Roc. Unsurprisingly the night promises us the unholy triumvirate of House, R&B and UK Funky. So while this night can’t promise us a point of difference musically, there is still something about it that is mysteriously grabbing my attention? What could it be?

Well…From the evidence of their press photos, despite having been taught the art of beat matching only very recently, these four models are guaranteed to send at least the male population of the club into a spin. Sam Cooke, the front(wo)man, certainly doesn’t appear nervous, “Hopefully, I’ll get the punters in a sweat with my house tunes - they’re the best way to fill a dancefloor in seconds.” And more power to her.

The female DJ is a rare, precious and inexplicably sexy individual. In what has been a traditionally male dominated industry, the advent of digital has now opened up DJing to anyone who has the ambition to try. It will be these newer, younger and fresher perspectives that will inextricably push and morph the boundaries of music production and live performance. And if that person happens to be a scantily clad human Barbie, then who I am I to complain?

South London got it goin’ on.

Next to South London’s infamous Fire is perhaps one of London’s best after party clubs. The Lightbox is an under-the-arches club which backs onto Vauxhall’s Fire and you can regularly see ravers piling in and out at all times of the morning over the weekend. But thanks to its spot-on location, super-fly outside area and the most incredible LED and laser display in the main room it is fast becoming a regular for big nights and May 30th saw the migration of the Don’t Techno Sh!t boys to the duuurty souf. (does anyone know of any nights who’ve moved location from south to north of the river? Answers on a post card to the usual address)
Gregor Tresher played a phenomenal 4 hour set from 2-6am and didn’t disappoint. Smooth, euphoric rises and falls punctuated with some filthy sub-bass gave the crowd plenty to move to. The only fault of the night was that they opened the second room which on a small night distracted the crowd and toward the end of Tresher’s set he didn’t have the crowd his music deserved. Still, this gave the hardcore and the stragglers more room to move which is never a bad thing. Catch him at Fabric on August 15th.

As for Lightbox; it’s a must for London clubbing. You’ve probably ended up there at an after party if you’ve got the stamina but definitely make the effort for a full night; the venue alone is worth a look and the lineup is never bad either. Gouranga is a safe bet on the 1st Friday on the month and playing dirty house and electro way into the wee hours.

A large nail was grittily smashed into the North London club scene Friday night as another fine south-of-the-river club opened to a full house. (Not that it’s a competition between north and south of course it’s just that the south is winning.)

Located within 200m of Shunt, SeOne and The Bridge, Cable is the latest addition to an already bursting club scene at London Bridge and for my money it’s probably got the most promise. A huge, dark club which perfectly balances the early rave feel of an under-the-arches illegal party with some slick bars, a high quality sound system and some good visual displays.

The night itself was pretty flawless with Jim Masters, Ben Simms and the guys at WANG compiling an extraordinary line-up. But all was topped off by the ever-flawless pioneer and trail-blazer, Mr Gerald Simpson (A Guy Called Gerald). Operating with nothing more than two mac books, a mixer and a lollipop he brought a perfectly clean and tribal sound to the arches. Constantly checking the levels in the crowd the set was nothing short of minimal perfection.

The London Bridge scene is pretty tight at the moment and Cable is a worthy addition to LBG’s armoury. Big Bugged Out night coming up on Saturday so get your tix in advance and head down.

Blood, Splashing, Blood, Splashing!

Only a quick post today, ‘cos I want to keep it fresh. Louis Louis seem to have permission to post Fake Blood’s newest remix, of Miike Snow’s ‘Animals’. I’ll write more about it when I’ve had a proper listen but for now head over there and peep it, as a new Fake Blood production is always good news. Unless of course you hate fun.

Initial thoughts: It nourishes completely.
